  • Potash and Rare Metal Deposits – from exploration targeting to production and beyond

    All day
    August 7, 2019-August 10, 2019

From 07. to 10. October 2019, a Short Course in combination with field trips were organized by TU Bergakademie Freiberg within the EXplORE program. Excursions were combined with lectures by invited industry professionals. First part of the Course was about the geology and exploration of potash deposits in Germany. For this, Professor Dr. Silvio Zeibig from the K+S Aktiengesellschaft gave a lecture about the geological settings of the potash deposits, as well as the exploration methods used in industry. The next day included an excursion to the mining site of K+S AG, in particular to the Merkers Mine in Thuringia. The second part of the Course involved visits by companies with ongoing exploration projects in the Erzgebirge on rare metals. Exploration geologists of the Australian Lithium Cop as well as the Deutsche Lithium AG showcased drill cores from their project areas. An mine visit with focus on exploration of new types of Li-resources was organized in the second half of the third day. The last day was for the visiting of old mining districts and the topic was the exploration on Li, Sn and W in these old, polymetallic deposits.
